Job Description:
Journalism Instructor Rising Scholars Program - Part Time Adjunct
Pool
Kern Community College District
Salary: $60.00 Hourly
Job Type: Part Time
Job Number: FY22-2300323
Location: Bakersfield, CA
Department: Communication
Basic Function
Please Note: Kern Community College District accepts applications
for part-time, hourly faculty pools on a continuous basis. This
allows the division to contact qualified applicants immediately, if
a need arises without having to wait for a period of time to
advertise. If there is an interest and/or need within the specific
department, applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be
contacted by respective department supervisors, deans and/or
division chairs. Applications submitted will remain active for up
to two years.
Kern Community College District is soliciting applications for
part-time, hourly adjunct instructors. The starting salary range is
$60.00/hour; Hourly rate may vary based on type of assignment and
the Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) formula. For more information,
refer to the CCA collective bargaining agreement or your college HR
office.
Representative Duties
The successful applicant for the position will provide instruction
in Media and Society and Beginning Reporting. Applicants should
have professional experience in reporting, editing, and newspaper
production and be prepared to participate in course assessments.
All course assignments will be for face-to-face, in-class
instruction. No online courses will be assigned.
The successful applicant will serve students in our Rising Scholars
program (RSP) previously known as the Inmate Scholars Program
(ISP), at five California Department of Correction and
Rehabilitation (CDCR) prisons. Faculty are usually assigned to
multiple sites to teach classes each semester. Two prison sites are
in Corcoran, two sites in Delano, and one additional prison is in
Wasco. Faculty commute up and down the valley to reach students
currently incarcerated. It is best to think of each of the prisons
as a satellite campus of BC and faculty are assigned classes at the
different satellites based on students' needs.
Faculty teaching assignments start after 3pm and end around 9pm
depending on the scheduled start time. Unlike other traditional and
non-traditional teaching assignments, faculty must be cleared by
CDCR through a background check and properly trained through both
CDCR and BC to teach for RSP. There are rules, regulations, and
codes of conduct that instructors must be conscious of and always
abide by while on site and when interacting with students and CDCR
staff. Although it might sound intimidating, our RSP students are
some of the most dedicated, hardworking, and determined students
you will ever meet. This position is a wonderful opportunity to
participate in a growing area of higher education taking place in
California and beyond. Feel free to visit BC's RSP page for some
general information about the program
(https://www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/inmate-scholars-program).
