Job Description:

PURPOSE: -This position oversees all activities and personnel for spray operations and pest control for organic crops, all compost operations and supply, and the implementation and use of automated equipment in the field.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Manage Farm Spray Division, pest control, compost operations, and the implementation and use of automated equipment on the farm. - SPRAY DIVISION: Oversee and manage administrative duties associated with Spray Division personnel. Work closely with Pest Control Advisors, Agronomists, and farm personnel to develop effective crop protection strategies and execute effective spray plans. Responsible for creating PO's and purchasing chemicals, equipment, parts, and services, and reviewing receipts/invoices. Keep current and accurate organic chemical inventory, maintain chemical storage according to state law and food/worker safety specifications, ensure that all chemicals adhere to organic standards, and suggest additions/subtractions from approved organic materials list in AIMS. - Ensure adequate worker training on pesticide handling and use, equipment operation, and safety. - Responsible for equipment calibration, maintenance, and ensuring that equipment type/number are sufficient to carry out needed spray programs for the company. Coordinate with Ranch and Harvest department staff on application timing, Restricted Entry Intervals (REI) and Pre-Harvest Intervals (PHI). Work with Agronomy Department staff and farm personnel to establish trials. Investigate pesticide/spray related incidents, respond to information requests by Company Administration and regulatory agencies. Review pest control recommendations, pesticide usage reports and permit supplements. Advise purchasing agent regarding chemical usage and purchases. Maintain DPR licenses by obtaining required continuing education hours. PEST CONTROL: Responsible for developing and maintaining a high-functioning, quality pest management program for the Organic Farming Division of Grimmway Farms. - Manages all administrative duties and daily activities of employees including but not limited to monitoring personnel, evaluating employees, calculating and recommending employee raises and disciplinary action, tracking time sheets, and monitoring vacation and sick leave. Clearly communicates expectations, goals, and responsibilities to the team and is responsible for employee evaluations and accountability. Develops regional strategies for crop scouting and determines schedules for both in-house and third-party employees to ensure that all organic production regions receive adequate and timely pest surveys and recommendations. COMPOST OPERATIONS: Responsible for ensuring a sufficient supply of various composts to serve the farming region. Work with the Compost Manager to understand the time horizon for compost availability, amounts of different compost in the pipeline, the needs and preferences for different types of compost by farm managers and agronomists, and coordinate a delivery strategy. - Also responsible for ensuring that all composting methods and finished compost meets all state regulatory, food safety, and agronomic standards. - AUTOMATED EQUIPMENT: Responsible for managing and ensuring the successful operation of automated farm equipment including, but not limited to, automated weeding and thinning equipment. Consult with Innovation Department, farm staff, and other company management to maximize the use of automated equipment on the farm. Responsible for all aspects of personnel, financial management, safety, and reporting for all activities under this position. -PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: -Must be able to remain in stationary position throughout much of the working day. Ability to move about inside the office, in the food processing facilities, and in the farming fields. Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity equipment. Ability to work outdoors. Ability to continuously work with product and equipment at ground level. Ability to work on uneven terrain both on foot and while aboard moving equipment. Ability to get on and off various stationary and moving equipment. Must wear corrective lenses if required/listed on driver's license. Must be able to move items weighing up to 25 lbs. - - - - - -JOB QUALIFICATIONS: -

  • Bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences or ag business management (or related major) required.
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years of combined experience in the areas of crop protection, vegetable crop management, compost management, or experience with automated field equipment required.
  • Must have previous experience working with sprayers and farm equipment.
  • Must be able to instruct, work, and communicate effectively with field labor and a wide range of personnel at all levels in different departments.
  • General knowledge of crop production processes needed and experience working with carrots and other vegetables a plus.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office business software and high functioning with respect to working with spreadsheets and manipulating data/information to generate reports.
  • Familiarity with company proprietary ag software a plus. -
  • Results oriented, ability to set goals and objectives for self and team and be accountable for both.
  • Must be knowledgeable of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Personal integrity, strong fiduciary mindset, and ability to properly handle privileged and confidential information required.
  • Must possess a valid California Agricultural Pest Control Advisor License (PCA), a Qualified Applicator License (QAL), and a Certified Crop Advisor License (CCA) in good standing.
  • Some travel will be required depending on business need.
  • Remote work not available for this position.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a clean DMV driving record.
