Position Summary

The Dental Hygienist, an independent practitioner under general supervision of a Supervising Dentist, is a licensed professional oral health educator and clinical operator who use scientific methods for the control and prevention of oral diseases to aid patients in attaining and maintaining optimum oral health. The Dental hygienist in Alternative Practice can see the patient without a preliminary examination by a dentist under the California Dental Practice Act.

The practice of dental hygiene includes dental hygiene assessment and development planning and implementation of a dental hygiene care plan. It also includes oral health education, counseling and health screening.

The Dental Hygienist uses dental hygiene care to denote all integrated preventive services administered to the patient. An objective in planning dental hygiene care is to insure the best possible sequence of procedures, which will contribute to restoration of the patient's oral health in the shortest possible time and pave the way to the long-range preventive program that will continue throughout the patient's lifetime. To achieve the goals of planned care, the Dental Hygienist must see hygiene procedures as part of the total plan for the continuity of the corrective and maintenance phases of an effective preventive dentistry program.

Serves as a part of an interdisciplinary health care team to develop, implement, and sustain oral health as part of Patient Centered Medical Health Care plan to integrate oral health services in a variety of settings.

Essential Functions Patient Evaluation.
Obtain health history.
Take radiographic survey as needed.
Give preliminary oral examination as necessary to chart visually identifiable decay, restorations and oral abnormalities.
Therapy. Oral prophylaxis will include manual and mechanical instrumentation (piezon), removal of all deposits on teeth (stains, plaque and calculus) as well as root planning procedures and topical fluoride application.
Recall. The Dental Hygienist is responsible for the implementation of an effective recall system necessary for the monitoring of patient performance over a period of time. It should be recognized that an efficient recall system is one of the key ingredients to an effective preventive program.
Patient Education. The Dental Hygienist will be responsible for ensuring that patients receive necessary educational counseling of preventive dentistry. Such counseling will include motivation, plaque control, proper diet and nutrition, tobacco cessation, etc.
Refer the patient to appropriate services upon completion of active hygiene services:

Routine examination by the supervising dentist of record.
Another staff dentist in Clinica Sierra Vista for needed examination and/or treatment
Specialty dental services i.e.periodontist
Emergency dental services inside or outside of Clinic Sierra Vista
Place on maintenance or recall visits with a CSV dental and hygiene program.

Required Skills
Administer local anesthesia (Under Direct Supervision of dentist present in facility - hygienist must have evidence of satisfactory completion of a board-approved course to administer).
Administer nitrous analgesia (Under Direct Supervision of dentist present in facility - hygienist must have evidence of satisfactory completion of a board-approved course to administer).
Assess patients' teeth, bone, and periodontal tissues indicating the presence of any abnormalities or suspected diseases or conditions.
Develop appropriate periodontal treatment plans without the direct supervision of a dentist.
Refer to the Supervising Dentist for examination within 18 months of treatment.
Refer to supervising Dentist any suspected lesion in the mouth or on the teeth.
Thoroughly remove soft and hard deposits and extrinsic stain from teeth, using hand instruments, ultrasonic inserts and prophy handpieces.
Instruct patients how to practice good oral hygiene; make recommendations as to appropriate products or devices for patients' home care; and provide other health care education, as necessary.
Perform prophylaxis in the absence of periodontal disease or gingivitis.
Perform full mouth debridement, either as a first stage gingivitis therapy or to remove interfering calculus to further enable a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
Perform root planning as a periodontal therapy.
Placement and removal of periodontal packs.
Place locally-administered antibiotics as supportive periodontal therapy.
Implement irrigation and desensitizing procedures or products as adjunctive to periodontal therapy.
Ability to take digital dental x-rays (intraoral and extraoral).
Apply cavity-preventive agents, such as fluorides.
Bonding for pit and fissure sealants.
Removal of temporary and permanent cement.
Make recommendations as to patients' re-care interval and follow-up needs.
All other duties and responsibilities as assigned and allowed under applicable state laws and regulations.

Other Responsibilities
Assist administrative staff with the interview process and final selection of dental hygienist.
Be knowledgeable of CSV dental policies and procedures, the Administrative binder as it relates to dental health and dental protocols and ensure equitable compliance.
Provide orientation for new dental hygienist and ensure smooth transition into the department.
Work alongside the CDO regarding operation issues.
Be knowledgeable of and keep abreast of Joint Commission issues.
As appropriate, participate in the selection and implementation of dental equipment and supplies.
Be a proactive leader with regards to dental software. Learn the program and serve as a role model for others to follow as we roll out changes to hygiene staff.
Serve as a trainer, as needed, for dental software system.
Provide a proactive, positive example to the hygiene department and address areas of concerns in an appropriate, respectful and courteous manner.
Communicate expediently with Administration as required and follow-up on items as directed.
Acting as consultant in unusual and difficult oral hygiene patient cases and advising clinical staff on a variety of problems.
Investigating and studying new developments in dental hygiene practice and techniques, adapting them to specific clinic needs.
Help develop and implement hygiene protocol and procedures
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Full vaccination for NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) is required.
All applicants must hold current California Dental Hygiene License, Alternative practice preferred.
Must hold dental x-ray certificate.
Bilingual in English and Spanish (recommendation).
Must exhibit a desire to participate in a community oriented preventive dentistry programs.
Ability to travel from site to site.
