Posting Information Position Title Norwegian Summer Culinary Arts Position Type CLV Seasonal - Summer Employment Status Seasonal Number of Months 3 General Employment Period summer General Work Schedule (days of week) six days per week General shift hours average of 9 hours per day Minimum Salary Village Chef - $425 per one week period; Assistant Village Chef - $335 per one week period; Village Cook - $285 per one week period; Village Baker - $285 per one week period; Kitchen Helper - $240 per one week period Job Summary/Basic Function VILLAGE CHEF: * Prepare authentic ethnic recipes * Maintain an inventory of all foodstuffs and equipment * Plan menus in conjunction with the dean one week in advance of planned meal * Budget and purchase food supplies as needed in accordance with guidelines set by Concordia Language Villages * Prepare and serve meals with the assistance of the other kitchen staff * Supervise and manage kitchen staff * Supervise and enforce sanitary requirements in the kitchen in keeping with state regulations for health and safety. * Report costs, kitchen policy, comments, problems and suggestions at the end of employment period * Valid US Driver's License * Willing to drive a village vehicle (car or van) knowing a motor vehicle check of your driving record will be done Compensation Starting at $425 for a one-week period, room and board VILLAGE ASSISTANT CHEF: * Assume full kitchen responsibilities in the absence of the Village Chef. _May be asked to assist Village Chef with all management duties of the kitchen including inventory, ordering, menu planning, scheduling and kitchen staff supervision. * Act as a liaison between the kitchen and program staff. * Supervise and enforce sanitary requirements in the kitchen in keeping with state regulations for health and safety. * Prepare and serve meals with the assistance of the other kitchen staff. Compensation starting at $335 for a one-week period, room and board. VILLAGE COOK: * Supervise the dining hall arrangements and cleanup * Assume full kitchen responsibilities in the absence of the village chef. * Carry out necessary tasks as requested by the village chef * Assist the village chef with menu planning * Assist with preparation and serving of meals * Assist with the kitchen cleanup Compensation Starting at $285 for a one-week period, room and board VILLAGE BAKER: * Produce all baked goods for the Village in a timely manner as directed by the village chef * Maintain all baking equipment and areas in a clean and sanitary condition * Carry out food preparation tasks as requested by the village chef * Assist the village chef with finding and utilizing recipes for ethnic baked goods * Assist with general kitchen cleanup as directed by the village chef Compensation Starting at $285 for a one-week period, room and board KITCHEN HELPER: * Wash dishes and utensils used during meal preparation and for meals. * Assist the village chef with meal preparation as requested. * Assist with kitchen cleanup and disposal of garbage Compensation Starting at $240 for a one-week period, room and board General Responsibilities of All Positions * Be familiar with and abide by specific policies set forth in the "Personnel Policies," which are designated by Concordia Language Villages administration and individual Village deans. * Read and become familiar with the responsibilities for your specific area of assignment. * After receiving your Staff Handbook and other material from the Village dean, read all information carefully and thoroughly before arriving at the Village. * Be advised the entire staff of each Village is under the direction of and is responsible to the dean. While some positions are supervised by other staff, the dean retains ultimate authority and responsibility for the Village. * Report to orientation prior to your first session as designated by your employment offer. * Assist with setting up the Village, preparing for the next session, and maintaining the Village throughout the session. * Speak the target language with villagers and staff members as much as possible. * Live in community living arrangements, assigned according to gender identity. Nearly all positions include living, sleeping and sharing communal bathroom facilities in a unit with villagers (participants); positions that do not include living with villagers do include living with other staff members * Model standards for behavior and be sensitive to the health and welfare of the villagers. * Remain one day after your final session for cleanup, inventory and evaluation of the program, if your position is in a Village. Minimum Qualifications VILLAGE CHEF: * Must be at least 18 years of age * Home economics major or minor, or similar, or equivalent experience * Experience with quantity cooking at a camp, resort or public or private institution * Experience with planning menus and ordering supplies * Knowledge of basic sanitation practices and procedures * Interest in preparing ethnic foods ASSISTANT VILLAGE CHEF: * Must be at least 18 years of age * Experience with quantity cooking at a camp, resort or public or private institution * Experience with planning menus and ordering supplies * Knowledge of basic sanitation practices and procedures * Interest in preparing ethnic foods VILLAGE COOK: * Must be at least 18 years of age * Experience with quantity cooking at a camp, resort, or public or private institution * Interest in preparing ethnic foods VILLAGE BAKER: * Must be at least 18 years of age * Experience in a baking or institutional kitchen or equivalent experience * Interest in preparing ethnic foods and desserts * Willingness to work evening or night shifts KITCHEN HELPER: * Must be at least 16 years of age * Interest in kitchen work Essential Functions . . . of all positions Emotional resiliency and cognitive abilities to carry out job responsibilities, ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships, interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals and groups respecting social and cultural diversity and to maintain appropriate boundaries. . . . of all positions that require living with villagers Ability to assist villagers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury); possess strength, physical ability, and endurance to maintain constant supervision of villagers; observe villager behavior, assess its appropriateness and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques; possess visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the cabin group. . . . of positions related to food service: Village Chef, Village Cook, Village Baker, Kitchen Helper. Ability to stand, use hands/fingers (dexterity) and lift up to 10 pounds continuously; walk, work in extreme heat, hear and listen, reach with hands and arms and lift up to 25 pounds frequently; sit, stoop, kneel, crouch; work with chemicals, work around noise, work in dirt/dust, work in extreme cold occasionally; operate kitchen equipment safely; determine the cleanliness of dishes, food contact surfaces and kitchen area; comply with Minnesota Food Code in food preparation; maintain appropriate inventory of food and supplies, work with the foods used to prepare our international cuisines without impact upon the worker's physical health. Ability to train staff; observe staff and villager behavior; see and respond to hazards; work with different age and skill levels; plan, conduct and evaluate designated activities; observe, assess, and coach the work efforts of staff being supervised; use a telephone.
