Position Purpose

To further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of activities at the camps adventure program areas(high ropes and low ropes challenge course)that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper's age and abilities. Provide management to the physical operation of facilities and equipment.Camp Lakota is a Girl Scout overnight camp that serves girls in grades 2-12. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

GSGLA Camp Lakota

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6, 272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and supervise a safe, innovative and funadventureprogram.
  • Coordinate (with the help ofchallenge coursespecialists) schedules that meet camp goals.
  • Evaluatechallenge courseabilities of campers and staff.
  • Deliverprogressive andcreativeadventureprogram activities.
  • Train and supervisechallenge coursespecialists.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training.
  • Trainchallenge coursespecialists andcampstaff intheiradventureprogramresponsibilities.
  • Schedule, supervise,and evaluatechallenge coursespecialiststo provide a safe and high-quality program.
  • Manage the physical facilities and equipment in theadventureprogram area.
  • Set upchallenge courseareas.
  • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
  • Conduct pre-season and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment prioritizing safety.
  • Check equipment and report maintenance requests to property team.
  • Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
  • Surveychallenge coursearea daily and keep the area free of hazards and debris.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Attend all camp staff meetings.
  • Assist in the planning of any special events at or near thechallenge coursearea.
  • Providecheck in/out supportandoutstanding customer service to families.
  • Other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications (Minimum Education And Experience)
    • Must be 21 years of age or older.
    • College/universitydegree preferred.
    • Current certification in challenge course operation or documented experience and training.
    • Prior supervision of anadventureprogram in an overnight camp setting.
    • Must complete and pass onsite high and low ropes challenge course training.
    • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
    • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
    • Mustpass a background check.
    • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
    • Ability to live onsite acting in an on-duty capacity for the duration of the camp season.

      • Must be flexible, adaptable, and willing to thrive in an ever-changing/fast-paced environment.
      • Attend GSGLA signature events and certain other activities/events (including cookie cupboards, etc.) as assigned.
      • Develop and maintain sensitivity to employee diversity in the workplace.
      • Behave in ways that demonstrate respectful treatment of other employees, volunteers, and girls.
      • Practice pluralism and be inclusive with the services provided.
        Physical Requirements
        • Communicatesand workswith all ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
        • Observescamperand staffbehavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
        • Needs to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
        • Constantlyrespondsappropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
        • Frequentlymovesluggage, tables, chairs, and program equipmentweighing up to 40 pounds.
        • Needs to traverse and moveseveral miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
        • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
        • Needs to sustain activityat6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
        • Must be able tolive in a rustic camp setting and workflexiblehours.
        • Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
