For 50 years, the UFW mobilized farm workers and their organizations across the country to advocate for more equitable policies, such as immigration reform, pesticide protections, heat standards, hazard pay, and other worker protections. We engage constituents in systemic change to break the cycle of poverty while also providing critical services. The organization has staff in California, Idaho, Ohio, Oregon, Maryland, New York, Utah, Washington D.C., and Washington State. SUMMARY The NY Worker Outreach Organizer performs a wide range of duties as assigned by the Organizing Coordinator or assigned Supervisor. The Organizer plans, directs, and coordinates UFW membership growth. Assists in managing and directing worker activities in the collective bargaining process. Work involves developing operational plans that meet the demands of the organization's needs, and political and Union organizing objectives. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Planning & Administration

  • Assists with Organizer Coordinator & Regional Director or Supervisor to develop operational plans for the area.
  • Learns and Participates in MOR meetings.
  • Ensures database is updated with company and worker information as needed. Worker Empowerment
    • Conducts personal visits, house meetings, general meetings, and other forms of contact to identify, develop and recruit farmworker leaders.
    • Responsible for the recruitment and development of worker leaders to form a union at their company.
    • Ensures the development and maintenance of a functioning and complete worker structure.
    • Assists to Direct and participate in the development and training of volunteers.
    • Learns to train worker leadership in developing their agendas to conduct their meetings.
    • Identify and leverage workers' issues to run programs or actions that attract worker participation
    • Use state and federal agencies as appropriate to enforce worker rights.
    • Obtain union recognition via union elections, card check, or 3rd party recognition Contract Development
      • Assists to develop plans and bargaining proposals with the negotiating committee
      • Obtains industry knowledge and density to increase bargaining power.
      • Assists to use innovative strategies to sign the first contract. RELATIONSHIPS
        • Develops and maintains relationships with the organizing committee, negotiating committee, crew representatives, and membership.
        • Develops and maintains relationships with labor, religious, political, and community leaders. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY BE ASSIGNED SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervise and direct some activists and volunteers as may be required QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty effectively.           • Education: High school diploma, or equivalent.
            • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience organizing, building committees, identifying, and developing leadership. Knowledge: Ability to learn how to use the MOR planning process and use effective training methods for both members and workers. Must have good organizational skills and the ability to work independently. Must be familiar with the history and mission of the UFW and be willing to make a long-term commitment. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fully bilingual in Spanish and English. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Requires a valid Class "C" Driver's License and a Passport for international travel. Must be proficient with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, E-mail, and Internet).
